Why does blanket weed grow?
Blanket weed is not actually a weed at all, it's a tyoe of Algae. Like most types of algae, it will grow as quickly as it can so long as there is nutrition available to do so. It's basic form allows it to spread out like a 'blanket', ultimatley clogging any open water space within the pond.
Blanket weed can bridge distances by breaking off and re-attatching to different parts of the pond, typically it will adhere to the sides and base of the pond, and grow outwards towards the centre.
Blanket weed will naturally subside, almost completely over the winter. But this is of little comfort to the pond keeper, as it will come back very quickly each spring. The growth rate of blanket weed is staggering, making physical removal a never ending job.
Blanket weed is often referred to as string algae, which is itself a common name bridging many other types of algae. The most common specific types of blanket wee are Oedogonium, Cladophora and Spirogyra.
Blanket weed grows under the following conditions: suitable levels of sunlight, suitable temperature and sufficient nutrients available in the pond. We can't do much about the sun or the temperature, but by controlling the nutrients available for growth, we can remove a vital piece of the blanket weed life source.Cloverleaf Blanket Answer introduces enzymes which compete with the blanket weed to absorb and convert the nutrients that it relies upon. It's a simple, organic but very effective solution!
